High Altar Crucifix

The Crucifix from the High Altar was brought into the sacristy a few weeks ago, enabling it to be seen close up. It is a stunning work, almost pre-Raphaelite. The Crucifix stands six feet high, and requires four workmen to move it.

The glass beads around the cross are extremely fragile, but beautiful, catching the sunlight and surrounding the Crucufux in a halo of light.

Below is Bentley's original drawing for the crucifix, faithfully executed, although the 'corpus', the body of the Lord, is far more powerful as created than drawn.

It's a glorious piece of work. I adore looking at it when in the Cathedral.
